150 Jahre Evolutionstheorie

Summer School "Evolutionary biology"

In den zwei Wochen vor Ausstellungseröffnung wird von den beteiligten Universitäten Stuttgart und Stuttgart Hohenheim eine Summer School zum Thema Evolutionsbiologie angeboten werden.

This year scientists and naturalists around the world celebrate two special anniversaries: The 200th birthday of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of his book „On the Origin of Species“. This book, in which Darwin presented his theory of evolution to the public, has changed the world like only few books before and afterwards.

To commemorate this double event, the three leading institutions in natural sciences in Stuttgart, the University of Hohenheim, the University of Stuttgart, and the State Museum of Natural History organize a summer school on Evolutionary Biology.

Stuttgart is a very special place to celebrate Darwin’s breakthrough. It is situated in one of the richest areas with respect to fossils from all geological eras. Therefore, the State Museum of Natural History harbours a spectacular fossil collection from ichthyosaurs to the Steinheim skull. Finally, Stuttgart and its surroundings is where world-renowned evolutionary scientists worked from George Cuvier to Wilhelm Weinberg and Willi Hennig.
